Overwhelming stress can affect us in many ways. In the most severe cases, it causes a person to become unstable, paranoid or even suicidal. Stress is a very serious matter. If you have a severe case of stress and it is causing depression, you will want to talk to a psychiatrist. Depression can cause a chemical imbalance that needs to be treated with prescription drugs. Only a doctor can diagnose clinical depression. With that being said, we can get into the various symptoms that an overabundance of stress can cause.

These symptoms can be caused by other factors as well and are by no means only caused by stress. If stress is not managed, it will cause any of the following regularly:

Restlessness, irritability, body is tired and tense

Wanting to sleep or the opposite, Insomnia



Rage or fear

Sweaty palms

Skin rashes

High blood pressure and heart disease

Alcohol or drug abuse


Over eating

Under eating



Joint and muscle aches


Digestive trouble

Premature aging

This list should not scare you. It is only on the more severe side of long unmanaged stress in which these things can occur. Sometimes, severe emotional trauma, such as losing someone that means everything to you, can accelerate things and should be dealt with by someone trained to do so.
